Sample Draft Letter to Your State Legislator
(Use personal stationery, or plain paper)
Dear (insert name of your Assemblyperson or Senator):
As someone who cares deeply about family values, I am asking you to overcome the differences between bill S-3131 and A-7303 to pass a law that would make sure that the many working New Yorkers who have health insurance coverage and suffer from infertility can have the access to care they need to treat this disease.
We are very pleased that the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly have now both concluded that infertility is a disease that should be covered by health insurance. We understand that the differences between the two bills are honest and legitimate disagreements on this public policy issue. We are confident that your consideration in further discussions will result in a bill that is acceptable to both houses of the New York State legislature. We are certain that either of these bills, or some combination of the two, will, with your help, become a law that will satisfy the critical need for infertility insurance fairness New York.
Your work to create a bill that is acceptable to both the Senate and the Assembly will help end anti-family discrimination. Having a baby is one of life's most important decisions. Working New Yorkers should not be denied that opportunity because treatment for the disease of infertility is not covered by insurance. Without this law, only the rich will be able to take advantage of the treatments that can help infertile couples to have a baby.
With your help and consideration, the many New Yorkers who suffer from the disease of infertility will finally have the same coverage and care they receive for any other disease. We ask you to move quickly to settle the differences between the two bills to form a law that Governor Pataki can sign.
We hope that we can count on your support.
Best regards,
