: I am a 42 year old woman. I have three children ages 15 to 9.I would like to have more, yet given my age I would like to increase my chances for having twins by taking fertility drugs. Does anyone have experience with this situation. Please write. Thank you.
Miriam,
Even with the aid of fertility medications twins are not as common as many people think. Also, without a diagnosed reproductive problem - a responsible MD wouldn't treat you based on your wanting multiples due to your age alone. The goal of reproductive endocrinologists is to assist couples in acheiving pregnancy - the most desirable outcome is a singleton pregnancy - these professionals go to great lengths to avoid multiple pregnancies. Secondly, there is a high risk with twin pregnancies which continues to climb significantly higher into one's 40's. Even in the mid-30's there are almost as many sad outcomes as there are happy ones. This is NOT an easy pregnancy and can frequently be very problematic. As the mother of twins my advice to you would be to not tempt fate, instead be thankful for those three beautiful, healthy children you've been blessed with. Best Wishes, Debi
