: As of this writing (6/15, 5:25 p.m.), the passage of an infertility insurance law in New York this year is still possible, but becoming less likely every minute. Talks with legislative leadership about reconciling the different bills that passed the State Senate and the Assembly are still going on as the legislative session draws to a close. The sticking point is the conscience clause, which would exempt religious institutions from providing insurance for procedures that they find to be morally objectionable. The New York State Catholic Conference strongly opposes any infertility insurance legislation that does not contain such a clause. The Assembly refuses to include such a clause in the legislation. So far, the State Senate has supported the Catholic Conference position. The State Senate recessed last night until next Thursday (6/22), without passing any infertility insurance legislation. The Assembly is still meeting, but is not likely to take any action before it recesses later today. The only possibility for action is that both houses reach some agreement before they reconvene next week. Keep writing, calling and faxing your Senator and Assembly Member.
