Dear Kat:
This can be a very difficult situation. Unfortunately, there is a limited amount of information the sonogram can provide. This is a time of rapid growth of the pregnancy, so what happens over time is important. A single sonogram cannot tell you what the outcome will be. In situations like this, I always wish I could tell the patient something more definitive, but I usually say just what your friend's doctor said - "we have to wait and see" only time will tell. If the sac is small and stops developing, that is a type of miscarriage. If the sac looks small one week and then develops normally, it was a normal variant. Whatever happens, it will help your friend having you there, a concerned person, to support her.
