Are you seeing an endocrinologist or a reproductive endocrinologist? Both can treat PCOS but if you are concerned about getting pregnant, you will want to see a reproductive endocrinologist. In terms of questions to ask her, I would ask how many PCOS patients she treats in her practice, what diagnostic tests she does to determine a PCOS diagnosis and to determine whether a patient is insulin resistant. Is she familiar with using insulin sensitizing medications to treat women with PCOS? In terms of medical journal articles, there have been a few articles in the New England Journal over the past few years, starting with an article in 1995 by Stephen Franks and followed by a few articles by John Nestler. Check out the materials on our website. In addition, the April edition of the AIA newsletter will have an article about PCOS by Dr. Steven Spandorfer. There is a lot of hope for pregnancy. Your best bet is to find a reproductive endocrinologist knowledgeable about the current treatments for PCOS.
