Mary: I'm not a doctor but I can tell you that most doctors will want to test to see if you are insulin resistant before prescribing glucophage (metformin). After testing, if you turn out not to be insulin resistant but have many of the other PCOS symptoms (anovulatory, elevated androgen levels, obesity, etc.), some doctors (but not all) will start you on metformin. Others take a more conservative approach and limit metformin to PCOS patients who are truly insulin resistant. Ellen Bender, AIA's PCOS Center
